Iobst & Associate Client Liars Bench Has Smash Hit With Randy Flack!

"An Old Time Appalachian Christmas With Randy Flack Brings Crowd to Feet"

Folks, if you missed Iobst & Associates' client the Liars Bench Show last Thursday night at WCUs Mountain Heritage Center you missed the best one of the year. We managed to persuade Nashville recording artist Randy Flack to guest star for us and wow, did he put on a great performance! More on Randy in a bit.
As always, Dr. Gary Carden, the creator and artistic director of the show, made announcements regarding upcoming Liars Bench Shows. He graciously thanked everyone involved in the show in the past year.
Dr. Gary Carden-creator & artistic director of the Liars Bench.
Gary showed an excellent four minute video produced by Joe Newberry (formerly of NC Cultural Arts) which was first shown in Raleigh at the end of October at the ceremony at the governor's mansion where governor Perdue presented Gary with the 2012 NC Award for Literature.
Liars bench star Paul Iarussi plays claw hammer guitar.
Paul kicked the show off with "Put my little shoes away" and yes, it had lyrics about Santa Claus and toys.
Lloyd Arneach, Liars Bench star.
Lloyd Arneach, Liars Bench Cherokee storyteller and famous in his own right  told the Navaho story of "For you."
Gary 'testifies' to the veracity of 'First Footers.'
Gary told about the New Year's custom of observing "First Footers" here in the mountains and the also the ancient custom of "serenading." Gary explained just why mountain folks made noise and lit fires "coming up to New Years."
Liars Bench fans
Randy Flack.
If you don't know this man, you should because he's as local as they come. Born over in Buncombe County (before it got 'weird') and raised in Swain County, Randy Flack has played the Grand Old Opry and the Blue Bird Cafe in Nashville Tennessee.
Gary told a quick story while the 'mileage' basket was passed about the very ancient myth of how the farmers animals would talk to each other and predict what would happen in the coming year.
When the audience came back from intermission Lloyd told a story about "Giving without giving" and the crowd loved it.
Lloyd Arneach, with the crowd in the 'palm of his hand'
When Randy Flack came back for the second half of the show he did "Fried Chicken," a song about a father's funeral; "I wish that I could go back," a song about growing up on Deep Creek; and a song about jumping out of an airplane, among several others--great stuff! You better believe he got a standing ovation.
Liars Bench fans give Randy Flack a standing ovation.

Paul and Randy sing a duet.

Paul sang "Christmas times a coming" with a little help from Randy--wonderful duet.
Thank you as always Liars Bench fans. You make it all worth while.
Bodine the Liars Bench mascot looks forward to seeing you in the New Year.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Patricia Cowan, president of the Friends of the Library said “We were honored to be asked to help honor Gary.”

When asked what he thought about this surprise celebration Carden said “I guess its okay. I really do appreciate the people of my hometown honoring me—thank you.”

To write the plays and stories that Gary has and to receive state and national recognition for them is an accomplishment that happens far less than getting struck by lightening. Gary's earned everything’s he's gotten and will be remembered for his plays, stories, teaching Appalachian culture, and portraying Appalachia and its people in a realistic and poignant manner across multiple genres. I'm proud to call Gary Carden a friend and a mentor.

Iobst & Associates Client Liars Bench To Perform "Birdell" Show At MHC

“Dramatic performance of “Birdell” to be centerpiece of Liars Bench benefit show at WCU Mountain Heritage Center.”

Sylva November 5, 2012—Thursday November 15 at 7:00 pm The Liars Bench presents “Birdell” at WCUs Mountain Heritage Center
auditorium. “Birdell,” a dramatic monologue by Gary Carden starring Bobbie Curtis, is the story of a defiant mountain woman forced off her land by the TVA caused rising waters of Fontana Lake. Carden has announced that this show will be a benefit for the organization. Consequently there will be an admission charge of $10.00. Tickets will be available at City Lights Bookstore in Sylva and at the door the night of the show.

Carden said “although “Birdell” has plenty of pathos, its not just a dark, unrelenting tragedy. It has humor all the way through the play. Some of the things that Birdell does in her garden just might shock a Southern Baptist preacher.”

Actress Bobbie Curtis portrays Birdell Tolly's life and her battle against the federal government. Ms. Curtis' grandparents were forced off their land by the construction of the Bridgewater Dam which formed Lake James. Curtis says “I feel that I am really in her shoes and that I have been there.” Some of Carden's other plays she has performed in are “The Bright Forever” and Ketti Frings “Look Homeward Angel.”

Member Stars Gary Carden, Paul Iarussi will perform Southern Appalachian tales and music also.

Iobst & Associates and The Liars Bench

Starting in June of 2010 Iobst & Associates took the opportunity to help Gary Carden and The Liars Bench launch what would become a famous on-going series of Southern Appalachian Americana.
What is the Liars Bench? The 'elevator' speech that Iobst & Associates developed for the show goes like this:
"A live, authentic traditional Southern Appalachian storytelling, music, poetry, drama, and folk arts presentation."
This tells the consumer what The Liars Bench is and what it does succinctly and effectively.
Gary Carden, Creator & Artistic Director of The Liars Bench

The Liars Bench Show started performing in a coffee shop (Signature Coffee) in downtown Sylva, NC; moved to a bookstore (City Lights Sylva); and currently plays regularly in the auditorium of the Mountain Heritage Center at Western Carolina University in
Cullowhee and other venues in the region.

Paul Iarussi, claw hammer guitar

Starting with the first performance artists were 'invited' to perform directly from the audience. Paul, a founding member of the Sweet Tater Band, has been playing with the Liars Bench from the very first show.

Lloyd Arneach, Cherokee storyteller
Lloyd Arneach, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, is a master storyteller, and nationally known in his own right.

Recent Liars Bench audience at the Mountain Heritage Center
William Ritter, old-time music virtuoso

From the beginning audiences received Iobst & Associates marketing message enthusiastically and crowded into Liars Bench performances

William Ritter, plays a variety of stringed instruments and sings in the old-time Southern Appalachian style.

All of the show's social media platforms were developed and are maintained by Iobst & Associates. These along with other more traditional forms of public relations/publicity used by Iobst & Associates allow the show to effectively communicate with (and grow) its fan base and to attract venue operators and most importantly place The Liars Bench unique story directly with the media.
Iobst & Associates and The Liars Bench is an on-going advertising, public relations/publicity success story.
